Keeping Your Cleveland Home Safe and Secure While on Winter Vacation

Whether you’re going to visit family members out of town, or simply going on that early-spring vacation you’ve been looking forward to all year, winter and early spring are times to enjoy. However, before leave for that vacation, keeping your home safe and secure should be your number-one priority. Use the tips below to make sure your house stays safe when you’re not there to protect it:

  • If you haven’t done it recently, have your HVAC system checked before you leave to make sure it’s working efficiently and won’t be a danger to your home when nobody’s around. When you’re gone during the winter, you can reduce the Keeping Your Cleveland Home Safe and Secure While on Winter Vacationtemperature in your home to save energy, but that doesn’t mean you should turn your heat off. Freezing temperatures can damage your home (i.e., result in frozen or bursting pipes), furniture and harm pets.
  • Ask a friend or family member who lives close to you to check in on your home every day while you’re gone. While they’re there, they can also do things like take in the mail and feed your cat if you have one. They should also flip on alternating lights each night so it appears that somebody is home.
  • Have a friend or family member drop by to turn on the water. Frozen pipes can be a serious problem in the cold winter months. Cold water should be run down the drain a few minutes a day, and toilet fixtures should be flushed regularly. If you don’t run water through your pipes, you could have a costly repair and damage to your home when you get back from vacation.
  • Make sure the outside of your home is well-lit at night. That means having all of your easily accessible windows and front doors illuminated with lights that can be controlled on a timer. Criminals may want to get into your home, but they don’t want to do it in the bright light where all of your neighbors can see them.
